If possilbe only purchase a week's worth of coffee at a time and store it in an airtight opaque container to prevent light from coming through.

Never use a plastic or metal container since they allow a fair amount of flavor migration and penetration which will corrupt the coffee.

Never store coffee in the refrigerator. The coffee can absorb
unpleasant odors and the temperature is not ideal. Ground Coffee can also absorb freezer odors. The coffee oils, especially in darker roasted coffee beans, such as espresso beans, congeal when frozen, changing the consistency and harming the body of the brewed coffee.

An odd tip that works: cut a green garbage bag into squares just large enough to line the inside of your container to hold one week's worth of coffee. Store the coffee inside this bag, and seal the top of the green plastic with and elastic band. Keep this bag of grounds inside the storage container. The garbage bag material is ideal for preventing light, heat and moisture from robbing the coffee aromas and preventing the coffee oils from going rancid. It adds extra protection inside the container.

Storage tips:

Always store coffee away from its enemies: light, heat, oxygen, and humidity.

Purchasing coffee in whole beans and grinding your own allows the coffee to stay fresher longer as there is less surface area exposed to air and moisture during storage.
